The Best Places to Propose in Montauk (From a Montauk Proposal Photographer)
If you're thinking about proposing in Montauk, you're in good company. I've photographed a lot of proposals out here, in the summer and in the dead of winter, and Montauk never lets me down. You get big ocean views, bluffs, quiet beaches, and some of the best light on Long Island.
Here are my favorite places to propose in Montauk, plus a few things I've learned about making the moment go smoothly.
1. Montauk Point Lighthouse
The lighthouse is the classic Montauk backdrop, and for good reason. The grounds sit right at the tip of the island, with water on almost every side. It's a great pick if you want a photo that says "Montauk" the second someone sees it.
Good to know: It's a state park and a popular stop, so it can get busy on summer weekends. Early morning or the off season gives you a lot more privacy.
2. Camp Hero State Park Bluffs
Just southwest of the lighthouse, Camp Hero has tall bluffs with wide open views of the Atlantic, and you can see the lighthouse in the distance. It feels wild and dramatic, and it's usually calmer than the lighthouse grounds.
This is one of my top picks for a couple who wants something a little less expected.
3. Shadmoor State Park
Shadmoor sits just east of town and has about 100-foot bluffs over the ocean, a long stretch of beach, and two old World War II bunkers on the property. The trails through the brush open up to huge ocean views, which makes for a great "walk and then surprise" setup.
4. A Quiet Stretch of Beach
Sometimes the simplest spot is the best one. For Samara and Adam's winter proposal, we picked a quiet part of the beach where the dunes frame the shoreline. It was cold, clear, and almost empty, and the photos feel calm and personal.
Winter proposals in Montauk are underrated. The light is softer, the beaches are empty, and you don't have to work around crowds.
5. Gurney's Montauk Resort
If you want a proposal with a bit more polish, Gurney's is a great choice. I've photographed several proposals there, including Jenny and Troy and Morgan and Carly. The oceanfront setting is beautiful, and their events team can help with setups like flowers, signs, or a table for two afterward.

6. The Bay Side at Sunset
Most of Montauk's famous views face the ocean, but if you want the sun going down over the water, head to the bay side. Spots along Fort Pond Bay give you that sunset glow, and you can walk to dinner right after.
Tips for Planning a Montauk Proposal
Plan around the light. The hour before sunset is my favorite time for a proposal. It's warm, soft, and flattering. In the winter that can be as early as 3:30 or 4:00 PM, so check the sunset time for your date.
Check the wind. Montauk can be windy, especially on the bluffs. A calm day makes a huge difference for hair, dresses, and nerves.
Have a backup plan. Weather out here changes fast. I always talk through a rain or wind plan with you ahead of time so you're not stressing on the day.
Know the rules. Some spots in Montauk are state parks, and parks can have rules or permit needs for professional photos. I check this ahead of time so you don't have to.
Give yourself a reason to be there. A weekend trip, a dinner reservation, or a "quick walk before dinner" all work great as a cover story.
