Why Couples Are Choosing the Hamptons Over NYC for Their Wedding | Capture by Alex
There's a shift happening in the New York wedding world. Couples who once assumed their wedding would take place in a Manhattan ballroom or a Brooklyn loft are looking east — way east. The East End of Long Island, from the North Fork wine country to the Hamptons and Montauk, has become one of the most sought-after wedding destinations in the entire region. And having photographed weddings across both New York City and the East End, I can tell you firsthand: there's a reason so many couples are making the drive.
The setting does half the work for you
When you get married at a venue like Gurney's Montauk, the Hamptons' Calissa, or RGNY on the North Fork, the backdrop is already extraordinary. Natural light pours in off the water. The dunes, the vineyards, the weathered architecture — it all contributes to photos that feel cinematic without any heavy editing. As an East End wedding photographer, I've watched couples get emotional during their first look simply because of where they're standing. That's hard to manufacture in an urban venue, no matter how beautiful the space is.
NYC weddings are stunning in their own right, but they require more intentional work to carve out moments of stillness and intimacy. On the East End, that stillness is the default.
More space, more creative freedom
One of the things I love most about shooting Hamptons and Montauk weddings is the room to breathe. City weddings are logistically intense — permits, traffic, vendor coordination across boroughs, noise ordinances. Out east, we can wander down to the beach for portraits, lose ourselves in golden hour over the vineyards, or steal away to a quiet dock without navigating midtown at rush hour. That flexibility translates directly into better photos and a more relaxed experience for couples and their guests.
Long Island wedding venues that rival anything in the city
Couples are sometimes surprised to learn just how diverse the East End venue landscape is. A few favorites I've had the privilege of shooting at:
Gurney's Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa — oceanfront luxury with a coastal-chic aesthetic that photographs beautifully in every season
RGNY (Raphael Winery) — a stunning North Fork winery with sprawling vineyards and that golden afternoon light that every photographer chases
Calissa, Water Mill — Mediterranean-inspired with lush gardens and a relaxed sophistication that feels like the Hamptons at its best
Harbor Club at Prime, Huntington — waterfront elegance on the Sound, ideal for couples who want the feel of the East End without going all the way to the Fork
The Vanderbilt, Centerport — a historic mansion on the water that brings old-world grandeur to Long Island's North Shore
Each of these venues has its own distinct character, and part of what I do as your Long Island wedding photographer is understand how to work with each space — where the light is best at golden hour, which hallways make for incredible portraits, where to position you so the background earns its place in the frame.
A destination feel without the destination price tag
This is the part that surprises most NYC couples most. A Hamptons or Montauk wedding can absolutely get expensive — beachfront resorts command premium rates. But compared to a comparable Manhattan venue, the East End often comes out ahead when you factor in what you're getting: more space, outdoor access, on-site accommodations for guests, and a natural environment that eliminates the need for elaborate floral backdrops or heavy décor. The venue does the decorating for you.
And for guests traveling from the city, a weekend out east has become a coveted mini-vacation. Many couples find their guests are even more enthusiastic about an East End wedding than they would have been about a Saturday night in the city.
